In our observance of this day honoring the contributions and sacrifice of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We will reach the goal of freedom in Birmingham and all over the nation, because the goal of America is freedom.”

 

At the bottom of this email I have attached a link to the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” which was written in 1963 by Martin Luther King Jr. who was imprisoned during a march for civil rights in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King’s monumental work was smuggled out of jail with the help of his lawyer and was an eloquent call for “constructive, nonviolent tension” to force an end to the unjust laws, injustices and brutalities that targeted African Americans throughout the South. It is perhaps the most important written document of the civil rights era and is a monumental work that has touched the hearts and minds of Americans for the past 60 years.
No matter what your religion is, color of your skin or what country you immigrated from you can thank the courage of Martin Luther King Jr. who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that one day all Americans would be equal and enjoy the same rights and treatment. The civil rights movement changed the course of history not only in this country but also around the world and the words of Dr. King should never be forgotten. Yet, as we celebrate his legacy today, it is clear that so much of what he fought for remains unfulfilled today in 2023. American can never achieve its greatest potential without a strong and healthy multiracial democracy.
